SUMMARY：

Esophagealstricturessecondarytocausticingestion,headandneckradiationandattheanastomosispost-esophagectomytendtoberefractorytooneorseveraldilatations.Oneoptionforthesestricturesishomeself-dilatation.Theaimofthisstudywastoassesstheefficacyandsafetyofhomeself-dilatationforarefractoryesophagealstricture.Aretrospectivechartreviewwasperformedofallpatientsfromtothatperformedhomeself-dilatationforanesophagealstricture.Patientswithproximalstrictureswithouttortuosityorashelfproximaltothestricturewereselectedforself-dilatation.Thepatientsweretaughtself-dilatationbythesurgeonandanexperiencednurse,andanappropriatesizedMaloneydilatorwasprovidedtothepatientandreturnedwhennolongerneeded.Therewere16patients(11maleand5female)withamedianageof60years(range38–78).Thestricturewasrelatedtotheanastomosisafteresophagectomyin12patients,causticinjuryin3patientsandcervicalchemoradiotherapyin1patient.Priortoinitiationofself-dilatationpatientshadamedianoffourendoscopicdilatations.Self-dilatationwasdonewithaMaloneydilatorranginginsizefrom45to60French.Themediandurationofself-dilatationwas16weeks.Nopatienthadaperforationor
